After graduating high school, reality struck; I had to get a better job OR go to college and keep working at a movie theater.
So, I decided to get a job working in construction maintenance until I decided what I wanted to do. Working in the industry and being surrounded by countless individuals who had since given up on their dreams – I fell into the trap: Force myself to go to a job M-F just trying to make it to the weekend - just so I could drink away the suppressed pain of not living a purposeful life! I did this for close to a decade before I finally wanted to end it all.
It occurred to me one day (when I was at my lowest) that since I had a knack for fixing things I could turn that skill inward and work on myself. Man! what I saw was a big mess! Once you turn inward and stop being a victim – reality bites you in the ass. Its never going to be pretty when you have a decade of self deferred maintenance. Imagine what your house would look like if you just threw all of your trash in the backyard instead of having regular garbage service. That’s what it looked like when I looked in the mirror.
So I put on my “do-it-yourself” hat and started searching. I recall that I may have phoned about 20 therapists which either did not answer – or if they did...we just did not vibe. Then came @drckblackmore.sf . She had a unique style that stood out from the normal "therapist" look. Her tone of voice reminded me of an old friend. We had a very casual conversation that ultimately led to a free consultation. Long story short – I went to the appointment and it was awesome! I felt like I made a new friend. I went from seeing her once a week to now just reaching out to say happy birthday or just check in from time to time.
Therapy gave me the foundation I needed to work on myself, find my purpose and ultimately become the person I am today. So when you see someone in a suit and tie that looks like they’re doing so well – remember that like you, everyone has their own story!
You may still not be where you want to be – but what matters is that you take daily steps to get there.
